Epidemiology of Complex Disease

The Bladder Cancer Prognosis Programme

This is a long term prospective multicentre programme of bladder cancer research jointly funded by Birmingham University, Cancer Research UK, and UK Cancer Research Networks. The Bladder Cancer Prognosis Programme (BCPP) consists of a follow-up study of bladder cancer patients recruited via 10 urology centres in the West Midlands. BCPP has so far recruited 1551 bladder cancer patients since it’s initiation in 2005. Our biobank currently comprises fresh-frozen bladder cancer tissues, normal samples, as well as blood, urine and toenails from every patient. It is one of the world’s largest and most detailed bladder cancer biobank and cohort study. It aims to be a spring board for subsequent discovery-based and translational research projects. New initiatives on risk factor epidemiology, quality of life, molecular markers, immunology, genome sequencing, integrative genomics, proteomics and metabolomics are being undertaken.
